2012-2013 Cruises

Anchoring Cruise – Martin Slough – April 2013

A nice cruise was enjoyed by all who attended. Hawksbill, Hokuloa. Cambria, Conch, and Ursa Minor. Anchoring CruiseWe rafted with two anchors 180 degrees apart in each direction. Very secure ! Saturday afternoon was nice enough to sit out on deck and enjoy the fun of being anchored with friends. We all had a very Green dinner on Ursa Minor and told lots of sea stories with ice cream for dessert. Rain on the deck to listen to that night with a few wind gusts. It’s always flat calm in there !
Sunday started partly cloudy with lots of beautiful sun breaks in the afternoon, very pleasant for the trip back to Portland. We all had breakfast aboard Hokuloa and then I had to leave early to avoid the ebb tide on my trip back. It would have been fun to stay and enjoy the anchorage a while longer but the moon doesn’t care. I made it back in 5 hours without too much current.
Thanks everyone who attended! Garry

Thanksgiving Cruise to Hadley’s Landing

November 17 2012
There must have been a lot of ears burning on the evening of November 17th! Those brave souls who made it to the Thanksgiving cruise had a great time talking about all those in the club who weren’t there. Despite the wet, cloudy and breezy evening, we were comfortably situated in what we dubbed “Wilsonville”, a really nice large canopy with side curtains on three sides, along with an outstanding propane heater, all supplied by Terry Wilson. Very cozy. And the food! The best ever. Charcoal barbequed, mesquite smoked turkey, two different dressings, gravy
(of course), Brussels sprouts extraordinaire, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and really,
really great conversation. The cheese and cracker snacks we had before dinner were also very special, as were the wine and hot spiced cider. The boats attending were Cambria, Conch, Ursa Minor, and Hawksbill.

Government Island, October 20-21, 2012

Despite somewhat inclement weather, with buckets of rain coming down throughout the weekend, the Halloween Cruise to Government Island was a great success. David Mangan on Hawksbiil arrived on Friday night and the rest of the cruisers arrived on Saturday. A total of 9 boats made it to the East Dock on the Government Island.

The boats in attendance were: Ursa Minor, Sequoia, Penelope, Julia Max, Hokuloa, Hawksbill, Conch, Cambria, and Baltic Wanderer. In addition, there were two visiting boats from OWSA invited by Penelope.

In no time the rain shelters were erected, and all the cruisers gathered around for a social gathering. It was a great opportunity to connect with the fellow cruisers and catch up with all the news. At that time, a few crews began carving the pumpkins that were judged by the commodore, George Stonecliffe. First place went to Conch, second to Hokuloa, and the third to Hawksbill.

A highlight of the evening was a costume contest. First place went to Nick from Ursa Minor dressed as Lance Armstrong on drugGovernment Island Docks. Second place went to Craig from Sequoia dressed as the Animal on Sesame Street and third to Ed and Sarah from Hokuloa as Grimm Reapers.

As soon as all the boats arrived and were safely tied, the preparations for the potluck started. The dinner was, as usual, a great showcase of home cooking worthy the best restaurants in town. As one could expect, a predominant dish was stew, very appropriate for the cold and rainy day.

Dinner was interrupted by a violent squall that rattled the rigging and tested the strength of the rain shelters. The rain was coming sideways pounding on the boats. At the same time, a double rainbow appeared and colored the river and boats with a yellowish tint. It was spectacular. The evening ended with a movie night on Sequoia.

Next morning breakfast was by no means a light affair. The cruises feasted on crapes, bacon, various forms of scrambled eggs and much more. Same as dinner, the breakfast was another confirmation of the incredible culinary skills of the SIYC cruisers. Soon after breakfast, all the boats began preparations for departure.
